By Sandy Michael — Certified Clinical Sex Coach & Sexologist
We spend a lot of time thinking about our bodies – but very little time actually feeling them.
Body Awareness Month isn’t about fixing, shrinking, or perfecting your body. It’s about learning how to live inside it with more compassion, curiosity, and respect.
As a sexologist and sex coach, I see this constantly: people want better sex, deeper intimacy, and more confidence – but they’re disconnected from their own bodies.
What Body Awareness Really Means
Body awareness is your ability to:
- Notice sensations without judgment
- Understand what your body needs (rest, touch, boundaries)
- Feel safe and present inside yourself
It’s not about loving how you look. It’s about trusting how you feel.
Why Body Awareness Impacts Your Sex Life
When you’re disconnected from your body, sex can feel:
- Performative
- Numb or rushed
- Anxiety-provoking
- Hard to enjoy
When you’re connected, sex becomes:
- More pleasurable
- More intuitive
- More emotionally intimate
Pleasure starts with awareness – not performance.
Simple Ways to Practice Body Awareness
- Pause during the day and ask: What do I feel in my body right now?
- Practice slow, mindful touch (even outside sexual moments)
- Breathe into areas that feel tense or guarded
- Notice what feels good – not just what looks good
The Takeaway
Your body isn’t a problem to solve. It’s a relationship to build.
Body awareness is the foundation for sexual confidence, pleasure, and self-trust – and it’s something you can practice every day of the year.
